NY event: Shuruq Festival at NYU from March 22nd - March 31st

Shuruq, meaning "sunrise," brings light to the diversity of life, culture, art, music, literature, religion, and politics in the Muslim world—defined as representative and inclusive of peoples from all over the globe, including Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. This year, Shuruq will take place from Wednesday, March 22nd through Friday, March 31st. Our events include lectures, documentaries, academic panels, dramatic storytelling and folk music performances, an international banquet featuring celebrated comedian Preacher Moss, and much more! Western Muslims: Diversity in Adversity

Shuruq 2006 will kick off with an academic panel discussion examining the intellectual and spiritual pursuits of Muslim women in history. Panelists include Mohammad Akram Nadwi (Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies), Asma Sayeed ( Princeton), and Barbara von Schlegell (Haverford). Ayesha Siddiqua Chaudhry (NYU) will moderate the discussion. Dinner will be provided.
